LAWAS: Rural people should grab the many opportunities made available through development projects carried out by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in its transformation programme.
They should not be mere passengers and watch others prosper, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.
“The people should not be mere passengers in the politics of development but grab the opportunities made available, particularly for the rural communities who still need much assistance from the government,” he said at the meet-the-people session at Kampung Punang here.
The Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture and Minister of Rural Development also said it was important that they uphold the culture of appreciation by reciprocating the government’s efforts in bringing development to them through their votes.
He stressed that being the northern gateway to Sarawak, Lawas was a key area for the government’s long term rural transformation programme.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, he said the state BN was always striving to ensure that the rural people were not marginalised and left behind in the mainstream of development.
He urged the constituents here to appreciate the efforts of leaders who had been voicing out their needs and aspirations in State Legislative Assembly and Parliamentary sittings, and reject the opposition parties which would be trying their best to weaken the BN stronghold.
“Strengthening political stability and unity of the people provide the platform for smooth implementation of government policies, making it impossible for the opposition to win in Lawas,” he said.
Jabu charged that the opposition parties – PKR, DAP and PAS – were strange bedfellows who have their own sets of problems and agenda and did not place the needs of the rural population as their main agenda.
“BN on the other hand taps into all the potentials of urban and rural Sarawak for a balanced development to benefit her people,” he added.
He said the proposed Pandaruan Bridge linking Limbang and Brunei’s Temburong district would benefit the people of Limbang and Lawas districts and lead to more systematic progress.
Later, Jabu announced an allocation of RM10,000 each in minor rural project ( MRP) grants to Kampung Punang Women’s Association, Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Sekolah Kebangsaan Punang and the village security and development committee (JKKK) of Kpg Punang.
He also visited Punang Agriculture Station, the ‘tahai’ (smoked fish) processing centre and fish culture there apart from Meragang Agriculture Station.
Second Minister of Resource Planning and Environment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, Assistant Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi, Lawas MP Datuk Henry Sum Agong, Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail and a political secretary to the chief minister Awangku Jamuddin Pengiran Kon accompanied him.
Jabu also approved a grant of RM10,000 each to SK Awat-Awat PTA, SMK Merapok PTA, JKKK Kampung Bangsal, JKKK Kampung Masjid, JKKK Kampung Menengah and JKKK Kampung Ujong, and Awat Awat Women’s Association in Awat-Awat, an old fishing settlement.
