Ministry Mulls Best Option For Housing In Sungai Asap

The state government will plan the best housing scheme for the 915 new applicants who have requested the government for assistance to build houses near the present Sg Asap resettlement area here.

Speaking at a meet-the-people session at Uma Belor (longhouse) in Sg Asap near here yesterday, Minister of Housing Datuk Amar Abg Johari Tun Openg said two options were being considered for the housing scheme to be implemented in Sg Asap.

“One of them is the longhouse concept, the master plan of which is still being studied by my ministry.

“We can also implement the Rumah Mesra Rakyat (RMR) houses which involves the buyers having to pay two thirds of the cost and the remainder to be subsidised by the government. The cost of each unit is RM90,000. Each (RMR) unit will have three bedrooms, two toilets, a sitting room and a kitchen.

“However, we will discuss the best option for houses to be implemented here,” he said.

Some 10,000 people comprising over 2,000 families from various Orang Ulu groups namely Kayans, Kenyahs and Penans are resettled at Sg Asap due to the mammoth Bakun hydro electricity project.
